Mortal Kombat X, Xbox Tablet, and a new Smart Watch?

There are a lot of topics to get to this week and instead of giving each one their own post I wanted to do a quick rundown on the more prominent stories I have been following.

Mortal Kombat X

They recently announced Jason Voorhees will be a playable character in the new Mortal Kombat game coming to next-gen home video game consoles. The announcement was sort of a surprise but very welcome as they already introduced Freddy Kruger in the previous entry of the series. There is no current word if Freddy will even be featured in this current game so hopes of a Freddy vs. Jason rematch will have to be put on hold until there is a confirmation. Even still watching Jason “face off” against Scorpion will be more than enough for now.

Super Mario 64 Wii U Virtual Console

Wii U is apparently a sinking ship, the big release of the month of April is a re-release of a 20 year old console game that launched their also troubled Nintendo 64 console. Don’t get me wrong I love Super Mario 64 and considering I already own it on Wii the price to upgrade was a reasonable $2, I still find it somewhat disturbing that this would be their flagship release for the week. I was almost excited for AVGN Adventures finally releasing on Wii U, but they took so long porting it over I already downloaded, and completed, the Steam version on my PC.

Splatoon

While on the subject of Wii U might as well talk briefly about Splatoon, the squad based paintball-inspired shooter game launching soon. Some have complained the game will not feature voice chat but honestly the game looks like it will be super fun with out the annoying chatter so I say fine by me. Count me in as a day one purchase.

Nintendo NX

Very little is known yet there is already much speculation on the announcement of a “new platform” coming sometime in the next year or two. The official announcement was NX would be a new game platform that would sport a brand new method of play apparently keeping with the DS, Wii and Wii U motife of reinventing the wheel every generation. Little is known so for now I will reserve judgment, the Wii U was a disappointment at first but it managed to win me over so there is a chance NX will be something I follow closely.

PS4 dominance

It is official according to the latest sales numbers PS4 is not only “winning” the word-wide console war for next-gen gamers, It is also a success in Japan, the county where console gaming has long since been declared to be dead. I can’t say I am surprised, I picked up my PS4 right after it hit it’s 1 year birthday and so far it has not been a disappointment.

Where is the Xbox Tablet?

While I am not a major fan of the Xbox game console, I am curious why Microsoft hasn’t attempted to make a gaming tablet sporting the Xbox brand. I understand they are supposedly integrating Xbox as a feature set into Windows 10, somehow, I just think they need to follow Apple and spin off the Xbox brand as it’s own operating system for gaming tablets. Sort of like how Apple has Mac for their PC’s and iOS for their “smart devices” Microsoft should keep Windows for their PC’s, and use Xbox for everything else. While they are at it, they could make an Xbox Watch.

American Society of Cinematographers

I decided to subscribe to the ASC monthly magazine as well as sign up for their website. My intention is to learn more about the art of film making from experts in the field to prepare myself for attending a film school in the near future. I currently need to meet a few prerequisite requirements in order to get into the university of my choosing so I will be taking this time to begin preparations for that eventual move.

I already completed a course in cinematography at my previous university so I have a foundation to start from. I am also currently working part-time as a video editor for a local news television station. I will focus on developing my skills while at work in addition to creating projects on the side. Because I want to become a proper professional I will be studying film techniques from different sources and perspectives. Previously I was merely relying on reading the book from my film class in school and watching behind the scenes documentaries on various DVD’s in my own film collection. I have decided to expand that to include a monthly subscription to the American Society of Cinematographers magazine in hopes that I can learn from the professionals in the industry.

I also looked into the requirements of joining one of the unions or guilds for film editors. I do not currently meet the requirements but I am working towards that so I at least know I am on the right path.

I am also in the process of producing a couple side projects for my own development. I have one more music video that I am working on and a short documentary film that I am still preparing to research for.

Another Cry for Dawn article because nobody cares

More specifically reflections on Faith, Wicca, stars, and some other stuff I have been holding back.

I recently started watching Buffy the Vampire Slayer from the beginning on Netflix. This is my first attempt to watch the entire show from start to finish, I plan on alternating between Buffy and Angel starting in Season 4 as that is how the shows aired on TV so I am hopping to get the full effect. I am okay with there being some continuity errors, I watch Doctor Who after all continuity is a four letter word for that show. Still even in just the middle of season 3, actually I am at the end there is just the 2 part finale to go, I will get to that tomorrow.

I have some gripes, thoughts and connections to other media I wanted to go over. I won’t go into the details because its late I need to get to sleep so I can work in the morning but here are some quick thoughts.

Obviously I like the show, especially the mythology behind it. I am not overly fond of Willow turning into a Witch and treating Wicca like it is some newly discovered X-men super power thing but I still like the character and the dynamic she adds to the show. A lot of people watched the show for Buffy, the cute slim blond who got what she deserved in I Know What You Did Last Summer. As for me, just like with How I Met Your Mother and the American Pie movies, I was attracted to Alyson Hannigan from the start. Yes I also thought Sarah Michelle Geller was hot too who didn’t but Willow was the kind of cute shy, smart nerdy type I was always into. Seeing her character evolve as she has was kind of painful for me at first, being a Christian I was opposed to her becoming a witch. Then I realized in the context of the show it wasn’t so bad. Then I realized if I was going to have a problem with that I might as well stop watching the show entirely.

This leads me to Dungeons and Dragons as usual. My first and favorite D&D campaign involved a haunted house in the haunted woods set behind a graveyard filled with all sort of undead creatures and the villain was a vampire sorcerer who was trying to raise some evil priest from hell. I didn’t get to finish the campaign because all my players moved away or I moved on or time went by, but I always liked how Buffy sort of reminded me of that campaign and so I began devising a new campaign set in the Buffy universe. Or at least loosely based on it. I would use a character similar to Dawn inplace of the Watcher or rather instead of Angel’s useless being. Speaking of Angel, no let me get to Faith first.

As much as I am torn over the direction Willow’s character is moving I am totally bummed what they are doing to Faith, I actually liked her better than the Jamaican slayer she replaced, until they turned her evil. I still think there is a chance they might redeem her but no need to get into decades old arguments of what went wrong there but I do envision in my campaign a character based on her that doesn’t exactly join forces with the bad guys but is similar in scope and dynamic.

Angel, so far I HATE him and I wish they would have left him in hell. I can not believe that character got his own show. The chemistry between Buffy and Angel is terrible, at least with Willow and the werewolf there is chemistry even with Xander there was a believable chemistry but Angel is like Buffy’s boy toy but he is more a prop than a character. Nothing like Booth and Bones on that other show the Angel dude plays in those two have chemistry even if it was forced on the audience against their wishes.

In order to understand my obsession with the Dawn character you have to keep in mind when I was a teenager, I was heavily into the occult so her character was very much appealing to me. I outgrew most of that after turning my life over to the Lord and finding salvation in the one true God of the universe. I know some who would condemn a man for watching this stuff but I can think of several good reasons why it is perfectly acceptable. But Instead I just say who cares its a story it doesn’t have to be taken seriously.

Alright so my obsession with Dawn goes back to Cry For Dawn being what I always pictured for A Nightmare on Elm Street comic book, even though they actually did make one of those I still think the premise for Cry for Dawn would have worked much better. Also you can thank the folks at Wizard magazine the comic book magazine I read every month along side my Electronic Gaming Monthly, they ran a feature on the Dawn character once right when I was in the middle of expanding beyond just X-Men comics so I sort of developed a thing for her twisted reality right off, X-Men are great and all but the dark stories of the Dawn character were much more my liking.

I don’t always just like dark and scary stuff and Dawn is so much more than just a demon witch (they call her a godess in the books but I figure she is probably a demon witch instead) I never cared much for the whole witches can be good bit to me they are always evil but the Dawn books found a way to show the turmoil of a lost soul, something Christians often forget that these people are damned to Hell for eternity and they are suffering inside. Alright so it’s not exactly preaching but you get the point right? If you want to understand the suffering a lost person is going through you need to study their works, and I find the Dawn stories a good place to look, Buffy is also a good place to so if you like Buffy check out Cry for Dawn, then go from there.if you hate Buffy still check out Dawn she is a fascinating subject in literature, even if she mainly appears as a twisted demonbitch in a comic book nobody read.

None of that psycho bullshit about redheads either, I actually don’t have a preference so that has nothing to do with my obsession but the truth is it is rooted in a deeper torment that unfortunately I can not describe to those who have not suffered it themselves.

E3 has come and gone.

Last year all the E3 rage was on how awesome PS4 was going to be, coupled with all the Xbox One blunders it was kind of a slow show. Nintendo was in their own little world begging people to buy their Wii U but then sending mixed messages about their 3DS platform.

This year was so much better. PS4 still had a good show, Microsoft made amends for their early mistakes by announcing the game Halo fans had been waiting for since 360 came along, a full HD remake of the first two Halo games in a big Halo bundle. I didn’t spend much time on the Microsoft stuff because Xbox is a hard sell for a guy like me, I don’t care for shooters much and that seems to be most of what they offer and I am not a PC gamer so PC style games do not appeal to me much either. Fable is the only property they own that I am still remotely interested in and they are hell bent on destroying that so why bother. I liked, not loved but liked Killer Instinct on the SNES, it was a joint venture between Nintendo, Rare, and Midway Games, three companies who all tended to work really well together. The game was somewhat unique in that it was Nintendo’s take on the Mortal Kombat/Street Fighter craze of the day, it was not as good gameplay wise as Sega’s fighting games, but it was a fun game to add to the collection. Since then Tekken, Virtua Fighter, Soul Calibur, Street Fighter, and yes even still kicking is the good old Mortal Kombat series, all doing ten times better at what Killer Instinct was only barely good at to begin with. The shooters don’t impress me much and I hate sports games so sorry MS you haven’t won me over just yet.

Sony on the other hand is the ones sending mixed signals this year, they show a game everyone wants and should buy their system to get, then reveal it will be multiplatform across all their systems, Vita, PS4 and PS3, why bother upgrading now when all the best games are still on PS3 anyways and they don’t look that much better as of yet on the PS4 to justify the price. I am all for latest and greatest and yes I was sold on PS4 by the tech and potential alone, but I am still holding out for some games before I shell out my money. I want one, I never stopped wanting one and that is a good place for Sony to have me at right now, interested but looking at my finances makes me have to pick one at a time so this year I chose the REAL winner of E3…

NINTENDO

Amiibas

Nintendo blew me away this year, I was not just impressed I was anxious to get my hands on some of the games they showed off so much I went out and picked up a Wii U right then and there. No need to wait for the price drop that isn’t likely to happen.

Up till now all I was interested in getting a Wii U for was Mario and Luigi U, Mario 3D World, Donkey Kong Country, and when it releases Hyrule Warriors, no where near enough to spend the money on a brand new game console, even if it is backwards compatible with a machine I had a love hate relationship with.

Here are the games that put me over the top.

Super Smash Bros. for Wii U

I loved Melee on the Game Cube, it was the best game in the series, one of the best games on the Game Cube and it had so much fanservice that the replay value of collecting those trophies was enough to keep it in the machine days on end. Brawl was a mess, it was just more of the same mixed with some odd choices, for me it was weekend rental and most and a throw away from there. I am not overly fond of the smash formula but there are things in the series that I do get excited for, especially the nostalgia stuff. With Brawl they broadened the appeal by including Sonic, well as a long time Sega fan I have had my fill of Sonic in recent years so I was kind of burned out on the character by brawl and wasn’t re interested until Sonic 4 came along. So seeing him in Brawl was not a big selling point for me and the online play was sloppy.

Wii U Smash is different, they added a few things that I just can’t refuse. First Mii characters are not playable in Smash, I was kind of tired with the Mii’s after about a year or so into Wii but they found a way to make them exciting again, think about it if you want a character in Smash Bros. but Nintendo doesn’t have the time, desire, interest, or money to make it happen, no worries make a Mii and you now have that fighter in the game. Sure Mii’s have limitations but they are fun and they add to the tone of the game which is all mixing everything from Nintendo’s past into one exciting game. Mii’s might still be relatively new but they are a part of Nintendo now like it or not so they do belong in the game.

THE REAL selling point for me was

smash4

Pac-Man as a playable character. Not only is is super exciting to be able to pit Pac-Man, Donkey Kong, and Mario all against each other in the same battle, with good old trusty Sonic or even Mega Man if you want, but it is also super cool they are including Pac-Man levels in the game. Pac-Man is one of my top video games of all time, it is usually the first game I get when I buy a new device, it was the first game I ever played as a kid and I put a lot of quarters into those machines over the years. Seeing Pac-Man, Donkey Kong, and “jumpman”, all pioneers in the video game universe, all in the same game is too much for a guy like me I went from being interested in the game to being hyped at that exact moment.

Splatoon

2557704-wiiu_splatoon_scrn01_e3

You will need to Google some videos of this to see how fucking amazing it looks. Normally I refrain from swearing in my blog posts because I try to remain somewhat professional and at least moderately civil but this game looks fucking amazing. It is a tactical squad based combat shooter like oh so many others, but with the Nintendo magic formula applied to it. Instead of space marines or generic US soldiers, this game is a cross between paintball and everything fun about Nintendo. The players are squid-human hybrid things that run around squiring paint on everything. the game looks colorful, bright, fun, and intense game play all mixed into one big bag of Nintendo awesome. Once a generation Nintendo makes a game that stands out and reminds people why they are still the number one game developer in the world, the ONLY software company whose games alone can sell a system with little to now third party support. Sure Mario and Donkey Kong games are always fun but its nice to have something fresh and exciting for a change too. This game looks like it will be tons of fun and I can’t wait. I am not super fond of shooters but I do play them, especially the ones that stand out, this one stands out like a golden ticket in a batch of bad chocolate.

Captain Toad Treasure Hunter

toad

I love Mario games but Nintendo tends to over do it with their plumber mascot. Toad is like Luigi one of the side characters that everyone likes but never gets his own game. Seeing Toad star not only in his own game but a completely fresh take on the Mario formula is awesome. I always liked Toad especially in the Mario Party games. I mean who doesn’t? He was my favorite character to play as in Super Mario Bros. 2 even. What I like about it is Toad is an actual Mushroom person so seeing him doing something in the Mushroom Kingdom is actually exciting, Mario is fun and all but he is human he looks out of place in the Mushroom Kingdom but Toad he is from there he fits right in. The game play looks amazing and the graphics look top notch as usual for Nintendo. This is the game I bought my Wii U for today, it doesn’t come out till latter in the year and most of the games I want are next year releases but I wanted to get a machine now to play Super Mario 3D World, the game that introduces the Captain Toad levels, before I play the full game this holiday season. Yoshi’ has always had his own games Princess Toadstool has had her own games, but I am sure this is Toad’s first and it looks fun, so much fun.

Mario Party 10 is it?

Damn I lost count but are they really up to TEN Mario Party games? Anyways this looks like more of the same for the most part but it added one special thing that really got me interested, playing as Bowser, oh yeah that looks like a whole lot of fun.Not much to say it’s Mario Party one of those games you play but you don’t get too excited for.

Hyrule Warriors/Zelda U

Both of these games look amazing and truth be told Zelda is always a jumping in point for me, as with most Nintendo fans and gamers all across the board, but his last couple of games had me losing interest in the series. I never played Skyward Sword and I didn’t care too much for Twilight Princess and yes I was one who hated Wind Waker, loved the art stile but not so much the Pirate stuff that felt out of place in a Zelda game. Anyways these two games look to be the type of Zelda a non-Zelda Zelda fan has been crazing. As Someone who liked Zelda 2 on NES I am always open for change in the Zelda universe as long as that change is not too radical like Wind Waker or turning into a damn dog. Hyrule Warriors is a hack and slash action game that pits Link and friends in an epic battle against thousands of enemies at one time. These games are rare and and especially rare on a Nintendo console, so this is a welcome change.

Little is known about the main Zelda except that it is “open world” and the puzzle solving will be less traditional but the trailer made it look super amazing and the interview revealed that the game will play more like a modern open ended game than a sandbox Zelda game of years past. It sounds promising and I hope they can pull it off.

There are also new Yoshi, Kirby, Wii Sports, and a bunch of other games coming but those are the ones that had me most interested. There are three very interesting games from the Mario creator Shigeru Miyomoto who is Nintendo’s top game designer, one of which is an episodic Star Fox game that might be cool. There is also a game called Art Academy that looks really interesting.

The final game to mention is something called Mario Maker which is basically a level editors for Super Mario Bros. games that lets you take Mario Bros. blocks, enemies, power ups, pipes, vines, etc and place them in your own design and share with friends. I am not too excited for this one but it might be kind of fun. For now give me Zelda, Hyrule Warriors, Toad, and Splatoon, and I will be fine. I am also somewhat interested in the Amiibo figurines picture above but I don’t know enough about them to really comment other than the collector in me is dying to get my hands on some of those guys.

Delusional but not lost

Global Warming, a hot topic issue that most people either choose to ignore, avoid, or devote their lives to. There doesn’t seem to be much of a middle ground either it’s either you accept it as a real threat or you pretend it’s not even real. Is there no room to meet in the middle anymore? I am not going to get into politics specifically but I wanted to start with that. It seems like in today’s world everything is at an extreme end of whatever spectrum it is, nobody ever meets in the middle, nobody ever compromises, and it seems like people are afraid to admit that they are indecisive so they take a stand even if they are unsure of what they are doing. Believe me I spent a lot of time like this, as do most Americans today. I have had to spend some time recently discovering things that I had previously felt I had worked out.

Let’s put global warming or global climate change aside and take that out of the equation. If you stop pushing the agenda for a second, either agenda, you discover that both sides make good, compelling arguments, but they do so in the wrong way. Instead of trying to counter each others argument they should find the common ground and work from there, that traditionally how things used to work. Let me give some examples. Most people, myself included, have no issue with recycling, we do have an issue of being told that we must recycle everything or else we are evil and bad. However there is not a strong argument to make against recycling people still get defensive when they are told to do something. How about instead of pushing the global warming agenda or the anti global warming agenda if there is one, and instead find where people do agree. We don’t all agree about the effects of waste, but we do all agree that nobody likes going to the landfill and we would all like to reduce our garbage bills somehow. The best way to handle it then is to focus on the benefits to the individual not to society as a whole.

Sticking with recycling for a second, doesn’t it make more sense then to work on a single family by showing them how much they could save on their trash bill if they recycled instead of throwing everything away? Most people already know if you save pop and beer cans they can cash those in, but what about paper, cardboard, glass bottles, or even old electronic devices. Sure we have places that will recycle them for you, some that are free but even those who will charge you for the “service.” Now that is the problem with the “green movement” as a whole, you get it in people’s head they need to do something and then they take advantage of other people. We all want to make the world a better place but I think we need to do it by focusing on our local community first and if everyone did the the whole world would just benefit naturally.

I am not sure how to go about getting more recycling centers around that pay people for their stuff but I do know that in a capitalist society that approach would work so much better than trying to guilt people into doing things. Most of us can barely make ends meet as it is, we are pinching pennies, clipping coupons, and scouring yard sales just to stay alive, we have no wiggle room in our budgets to pay for something like Recycling, even if we deep down want to make a difference. Some of us do our best by crushing cans and taking them to the salvage yard but even that is not always worth the effort for some people. So where does that leave us, personally I can’t afford to add recycling pick up to my garbage bill so all that stuff they would want me to recycle just goes into the regular garbage bin anyways. Maybe if the land fills were more organized and could sift through the garbage they receive to separate out the recyclable goods from the trash but even that sounds like a real effort.

Maybe instead of cities charging to pick up recycling goods, maybe they could offer you a discount on your normal trash pick up instead? Like if you actually use the recycling bin as instructed and you donate enough stuff they can deduct that from your trash bill, maybe not enough to cancel each other out but probably enough to get more people taking up the cause, just stealthily. You see some people just don’t care anyways so no amount of preaching is going to get them to budge. These same people will resist further government regulations that say force them to recycle, so why not meet them in the middle? I think this approach works best because it has the least amount of resistance, sure those who do no recycle might argue they shouldn’t have to pay for trash pick up either if those who do recycle get their bills reduced, but that will only make it harder for them to hold out, as more of their neighbors take up the service it puts pressure on them to get with the program and if it reduces your trash bill then it further makes them look silly for holding out because then they become the ones fighting for a cause, only instead of it being a lost cause as people think global warming is, it becomes a pointless cause they will gladly abandon once they figure out how much being stubborn is costing them.

There is a company up on Idaho starting to develop a new solar road system that if put into place correctly will solve our energy crisis. Although the term energy crisis is another extreme end of the spectrum that people also feel hopeless about when they give it any thought. We all know how little good adding solar panels to your house is. The energy you generate is not enough to offset the start up cost so people just refuse to even make a token effort. I would think that if people made a minimal effort like say adding just solar panels to the garage or tool shed it would help but again you have to do more to motivate people. This is where I believe the solar roadways will actually work so much better. I won’t go into major details but I will post a link to their website for anyone who wants to read more.

http://www.solarroadways.com/intro.shtml

The general idea is you have a road that creates power, keeps itself clean during snow storms (which would be nice by the way), and increases our internet coverage all by being built into this new high tech road system. Sure the vision they have is decades away, if the usual hurdles get in the way. But I think we could see it much sooner if we really think about the small time, short term immediate benefits to the individual rather than focus on the long term benefits to society as a whole. If a person was already considering say a hybrid or electric car but was turned off by the added expense to the power bill here is an alternative charging method that might actually be more desirable. Instead of paving your drive way with concrete you install a solar road system, it combines solar technology with some really cool features like being able to charge your electric car, reducing your power bill, and never having to shovel snow again, all benefits that have more than monetary value.

Let’s go back to solar panels on the house, the reason why these do not “pay” for themselves is because literally the only benefit you get from installing them is a little free power from the sun, big deal right? But with the solar road system you get added value like take not having to shovel the snow ever again. Think about how much time, effort, personal energy and money it takes to do that task alone. If they really want this idea to take off I think forget the global warming crowd, forget the energy crisis angle just sell it as a snow removal option that also happens to reduce your power bill in the process and suddenly you have something that might not pay for itself monetarily but adds personal value by giving people more time with their families, something we can all appreciate more than just saving money. Sure they will eventually pay for them selves too but they will do so faster because now you are adding value to someone’s life which is more valuable than just money. This is the angle the left often ignores and the right forgets about, people value their time more than their money it is the reason why we pay $3 bucks for a cup of coffee when for $6 bucks we can have a weeks worth of coffee at home. Time is important to people and if you focus on the time value angle instead of the helping society angle more people might be willing to respond in a positive light rather than being so resistant to change.

Modern Myths, UFO’s, Angels, and more

Recently I was watching a web video that I check out once in a while and they brought up a topic that I have been considering tackling for some time now. I am not sure if I want to turn this into a full blown series or not. I might offer my generalized views on some of these topics sans “real evidence” and see where it goes. I disagree with the notion that our internet culture has perpetuated this myth that everything needs to be proven in order for it to be fact.

Anyways the topics I intend to discuss are some that I have been considering for a while now so here they are, UFO’s/Aliens, Lochness Monster, Big Foot, Fairies, Dinosaurs, Dragons, Gods, Demons, Ghosts, Angels, Space Travel, Time Travel, Life After Death, ESP, Secret Societies, and cyborgs.  I might go into more depth with certain topics but for now I just want to throw some of my general thoughts down for others to consider.

I will tackle them one at a time so sit back and prepare for a whole bunch of controversy.

Aliens/UFO’s

For starters I would like to distinguish between UFO’s and Extraterrestrials. I am skeptical that any government or even coalition of Governments could manage to come together to fully enact a complete cover up on something that would have such a huge impact on human society. I mean hell the governments of the world can’t even agree on Global Warming how the hell can anyone believe they are competent enough to secretly agree to cover up any contact with any extraterrestrial life.

I am not going to say the universe is so big there is a probability there might be life out there, that is nonsense. First off we do not know how big the universe really is, even the best estimates by the supposed experts are not consistent and if you really examine their evidence it’s dubious at best. We don’t know if the Universe is a billion light years across, or barely ten thousand light years, or even smaller, or larger. We don’t even know the shape of the universe, which makes any size estimates impossible.

There is a theory that suggests the universe is a giant bubble, well if we look too far part say Andromeda in one direction and measure the light from an object further from Andromeda in one direction how can we tell if the universe is a bubble that we are not seeing the light wrap around and the object supposedly far away past Andromeda is really close by on the OTHER side of us but we are just not able to measure it properly because our instruments can only measure what light PASSES by our Star, we can’t even account for the light that goes in a complete opposite direction. Consider this, if in fact we sitting here on Earth can see in every direction possible then that leads me to speculate that we must in fact be the center of said universe.

But since that is not the accepted view and the ‘evidence’ is skewed towards a specific world view, it makes it difficult to make any argument one way or the other. So the universe could be so big we can’t fathom it, or it could be smaller than we realize. How do we know those “Red Giants” are really super massive stars mega light years away, rather than “tiny dwarf stars” that are just barely past Pluto? We don’t know and the scientists admit they don’t know. There are some commonly quoted experiments that are taken as fact when in reality they are guesses based on very outdated math.

If you take that away and assume the universe is smaller than expected the chances of alien life out there shrinks. Now not to totally dismiss the science because there is solid evidence that we can measure, but it is our interpretation of the data that I question. I do know no matter what there is no chance in HELL every single government secretly agreed to cover up alien contact, what would be their motivation for doing so, hell our own Government can’t even agree on a single issue, other than to give themselves pay raises so unless the aliens promised every single Government official eternal life, I doubt there is any way they could have covered it up this long.

UFO’s are a different story, there are secret government weapons being developed all the time so those are your “Unidentified Flying Objects” but Flying Saucers, not possible.

Aliens Real or Fake: Fake

Lochness Monster

Despite all I had to say about aliens I have only one thing to say about this one, twenty years ago I could have given this a possible consideration but with our current underwater imaging technology there is no Lochness Monster sorry but if there was it would have been found by now, HELLO if it was REAL Scotland would not cover it up they would be capturing that son of a bitch and having their own little “Jurassic Park” honestly this is a no-brainer.

Real or Fake: Fake

Big Foot

Do men walk the Earth, yes, do Apes and other primates walk the Earth, also yes. Is there a chance there is some un-evolved Human/Ape Hybrid hiding out in the Canadian and USA, not a chance. Again this comes down to two realities, the big foot is not the supposed missing link. With that said I DO think there could be some type of as of yet uncategorized life form that might resemble the big foot creature.

Real or Fake: Possible but not likely what people think it is.

Fairies

This one is a little less controversial, most people would just dismiss any notion Fairies could even exist and shrug them off. On the other hand I do believe there are spiritual forces out there we can’t explain, see my views on Ghosts, Demons, and Angels, below. I have researched both the Celtic view on fairies and more modern views on fairies. I believe that there could be some creature out there that could use magic to disguise itself from man kind.

Yes I do believe in “magic” but when you read what I consider magic it might shatter your mind. Either way I am skeptical that the Tinker Bell type fairy is real or has ever existed, I think what people think of as Fairies are modernized perversions of outdated views on Angels and nothing more. Since I do believe in Angels I would contend that Fairies are just Angels that have been miscategorized.

Fairies Real or Fake: Real but misunderstood

Dinosaurs

I am not sure if I want to get into this one too deep, I have strong views on this subject that are complicated and difficult to resolve with current mass cultural views. I think Dinosaurs might have existed and might still exist, but I doubt they are what we classify them as. In fact I find it easier to believe in Dragons than I do Dinosaurs. I think that despite the common perception there is a lot of evidence that is not only dubious but it’s not even generally agreed upon. Not to mention just like with Stars, we are interpreting data and you can’t assume one interpretation must be right and another must be false. That is why I think realistically Dinosaurs are harder to reconcile with my beliefs.

Real or Fake: Real but see below.

Dragons

Dragons are spoken of in nearly every world religion in one way or another and not a single one resembles a single species of Dinosaur that has been classified. In fact none of the current fossils on display even match the views on Dinosaurs as most have been rearranged so many times it’s all speculation how the bones went together no matter what anyone says.

I think Dinosaurs and Dragons are the same thing and I believe they both do still exist but I think they are not the same as what people picture. Dragons are less likely to be Lord of the Rings, D&D, type monsters but I think they are probably just giant snakes that some people might have over exaggerated. I do believe in the spiritual war between God and Satan and I am sure Satan can and does in fact use Dragons in his arsenal.

Real or Fake: Very real, but spiritual today, physical form unknown

Gods

I am torn on this one, I believe that the God of the Bible is the one true God, the Almighty creator of everything. I also believe that the Bible mentions other gods, even false gods, in a context that could be interpreted many different ways. Ca I say for sure that Demons are being worshiped as “gods” or that other, lesser godlike beings can’t exist? There are such confusing and difficult imagery in the Bible I content that there is one higher God, the God of the universe, but I don’t know that is mutually exclusive to a singular pantheon or if it is possible God might have other beings that are considered gods by others. I believe that there are unexplainable spiritual forces and not all of them can be classified simple as Angels and Fallen Angels/Demons.

Gods Real or Fake: Jesus, the Almighty Lord our Holy Father an the Holy Spirit, very real I would give my life for that, lesser “gods” there are some spiritual beings we can’t explain, some of them might be what other cultures worship as gods so they might be real but they are not the One True God.

Demons

Fallen Angles, as the common Biblical understanding refers to them as. I find that safe and believable. I think Demons are separate from Devils and The Devil, or Satan but I am not sure how they rank.

Demons Real or Fake: Very real.

Ghosts

Some Christians think Ghosts are impossible, some claim they are just demons trying to trick people or Angels that aren’t fully understood. I believe they are possible. The Bible is not at all clear on what specifically happens the exact moment we die. The common quoted verse says “Absent from the Body Present with the Lord” well contradicts, on the surface, the notion of God being Omnipresent. Meaning if the Holy Spirit dwells in our Body, another verse calls our body the “temple of the Lord” then we are always present with God.

Also there is the verse, the Dead in Christ Shall Rise first, among others such as the story of the man in hell talking to people in Heaven, or at least outside of Hell. My view is people once dead leave their bodies, some might go straight to heaven or they might stick around, at God’s approval of course, and try to accomplish whatever He allows them to. I think He can also extend this courtesy to the damned also, there is nothing that says once you leave your body your instantly in Hell if you are damned, in fact it makes it sound very much like there is a future date where that happens so ghosts might be damned souls sticking around trying to warn their loved one and they are just not able to reach them all. See ESP below.

Ghosts Real or Fake: Real but they could be unexplainable.

Angels

Real

Time Travel

If time travel were possible it would put God in quite a bind. The Lord and his Heavenly Host can see the future, I am sure they can extend that to human should they choose but going forward or backwards in time is not humanly possible without aid of the Lord Almighty, and the scientific community agrees the laws of Physics make time travel impossible as does all philosophical views on the subject.

Real or Fake: Fake

ESP

This is a more touchy one, I do believe in spiritual forces and I believe in magical or supernatural abilities to manipulate these forces. ESP is just one supernatural ability all Christians should be fully aware of, in a sense Prayer is a type of ESP and I believe in the power of Prayer.

Real or Fake: Real with Spiritual assistance.

Secret Societies

I don’t know if I can tackle this one in such a short space, honestly I doubt the Illuminati, the Free Masons, or even the Church of Scientology have some global reach that can manipulate world events. Do I think it is possible for secret societies to exist, yes I call them Cults and some have extraordinary reach, others are just localized.

Real or Fake: Real but I doubt there is a single one with a global reach. Stay Cool.

Status Update, life and stuff.

I took the site down, I am rebuilding it. The truth is I was trying a new content management software and decided I hated it. I like to be in more control of the look and feel of the websites I put my name on. So I am rebuilding the site using the tools I know how to make it the way I want. Going Broke Media is not a site for the public it is a site, plain and simple, for me to promote myself period. I intend to use it to showcase all the creative works I can because I want to use it to promote my career.

I can’t explain it to people who think money is the only motivator but I don’t want to work a typical job and live a typical life. I am willing to get a realistic job that is suitable for my talents and earn a proper living which is why I am in school, but I am a visionary, an artist, a story teller at heart and I need a venue to share my works. That is what Going Broke Media is. I chose the name because I am flat broke and it sounds better than cliche starting artist or something lame. Also it has a nice ring to it.

No it is not a joke it is the real name of my company, a company that I actually am in the process of building from the ground up. What I want to do is not something I can explain to people I don’t have a career path in mind. I want a degree that gives me the flexibility to move where I want and get into any normal office or business at the entry level, which is why I settled on Business.

My typical go to work job needs to be something where I can have job functions that use my talents of organizing data and problem solving and business is that. I am pretty talented at keep track of information and deciphering what it means, writing reports, and processing that data into tangible arguments and presentations. Consider that my day job, the Bruce Wayne of what my life will be. The other side is the creative person who strives to do whatever I want as long and as much as I can.

Some things not many people know about me but I do like to paint. I have canvases, paints, and an easel all for the purpose of creative paintings. No I don’t want to be a painter it isn’t even a hobby it’s just something to do when I feel like it. Something most people do know is I like to make music, and I also like to create and edit videos. Now I don’t exactly want to make a career in video production, I researched what it takes and it’s not for me.

However in today’s world with our modern technology it is possible to create audio/visual works with little money. As someone who has studied theater, films, cinematography, and mass communication in general, I am fairly confident that I can create videos that are compelling and entertaining. I might not become a big budget film maker, which again that is not my goal, but I will continue to make videos as much as I can. I do it because it’s what I want to do.

I also write short stories for the same reason, I have tried many times to write a novel and realized that was not for me, what I should do is write a story that interests me and instead of trying to get it published in the traditional way to make money, I will just share my works with the world via my new website. The point is I just want to share my works with people because it gives me pleasure doing so, even if they do not fully understand my works.

Not everyone gets A Midnight to Forget, hell it was a sloppy effort for an online film class that I cut together using random footage I had saved up over the years. But see that was the point, when I began shooting random footage over the years it was with the intention to compile it all together at a later date and weave it into a visual story, something I accomplished even if it does need explaining for people to “get it” and those who don’t get it that is fine it isn’t meant to be gotten by everyone. The same is true for my music, I create music with one purpose, for me to listen to when I am in the mood, others are free to enjoy my music if they choose to but the music I create is for me.

So what changed, when did I stop trying to commercialize my works? I didn’t are you not paying attention that is what the website is about, by compiling all my creative works together I am show casing to the world all that I do, giving them a place to see what I have done, what I am working on currently, and what I intend to do down the road.

This opens up the door for me to sell my ideas to those who might be interested or maybe someone approaches me and likes what they see and asks for my help with something. I can afford to be selective because my goal is not to be a famous director or music producer, my goal is simply to do what I enjoy doing and live the life I set out to live. Some think of it as lonely but that is their problem, their weakness not mine.

What about The Spiders Lair? What is that all about you might ask? Well let me put it simply Going Broke Media is my professional side, it showcases all the creative works that I have done or will ever do. The Spiders Lair is a personal website that show cases all the things that inspire me in this world, those things that interest me the most. It is also a place for me to organize my thoughts. Both web sites are currently under construction but since they are basically pretty simple ventures there is not much to do I expect them to be completed shortly.

Some websites I attempted to do before were just overwhelming, these latest two ventures are actually rather simple, they represent me, my professional, creative, artistic side, and my personal side. I do not currently have a time frame on when either site will relaunch, I would hope to get them going this next week or so but realistically it might be this summer before I get them up and running due to school, work, and life in general. Stay Cool.

Confessions of a video game collector

I decided to get back into video game collecting. Well not so much the collecting as just getting back into buying and playing some classic video games. Recently I have been in a little bit of a weird place in my life, trying to get back on track after being kicked out of school, evicted from my apartment and that spur of the moment flee to California which ended up a big mess. A few years ago I basically decided to give up on doing what was right and I drifted into the shady world of internet piracy.

What started me down that path was buying a Nintendo Wii and getting addicted to downloading classic games via their Virtual Console service. I had amassed quit a collection of classic gaming machines over the years as well as a ton of movies on DVD and more books than I could ever read. At some point I discovered I could replace everything with digital copies, sounds simple enough except I was broke, no money to buy digital anymore, I was out of work and facing a low point in my life. So I turned to piracy as is often the case. I traded in my game consoles to pawn shops and I bought my self a series of USB external hard drives for my PC and proceed to download, everything.

I started out small and innocent enough, only classic games I either previously owned or purchased via Virtual Console, a few hundred MP3s from limewire to fill up my newly acquired 80GB iPod classic, and a couple of movies I ripped from DVD that I put onto my iPod video to try it out. That was the trigger that set me off, I needed more movies and soon enough ripping DVD’s became too time consuming it was just easier to torrent the stuff, once you go through the process of setting up a torrent client, setting up a secure network, and then waiting for an invite to get into the good sites, you pretty much have to go all in in order to make it worth the effort.

I didn’t stop at movies, pretty soon I had TERABYTES of movies, TV episodes, cartoons, anime, pretty much anything I had ever seen I had downloaded, including a ton of commercials and movie trailers just for the hell of it. Oh and every video game ROM I could find, every ISO, every PC game I could get my hands on, pretty soon my digital collection far surpassed my wildest dreams of content, and as always it was never enough so I branched into comic books, e-books, magazines, pretty soon if it was available to download via torrent it was on one of my hard drives.

As a pretty decent and generally honest person I told myself it was ok because if I had a VCR I would be recording all this stuff anyways, and to make it look semi-legit and to ease my own conscience I even did just that, I purchased a video capture card (DVR) for my PC so I could record movies and TV shows straight to me PC, that is actually something that you CAN do legally but I used that as a front for the other, shadier stuff not that I took it seriously.

Soon that wasn’t enough and I was DVR’s *and* downloading everything I could. It was like a drug the more I had the more I needed. It didn’t even bother me until I saw a movie at a store on DVD and offered to buy it for someone and they said why buy it when you can just download it anyways.

It got me to thinking what I had become. Since I got into school and was studying mass media I really started to feel guilty because I realized who it actually hurts when people pirate stuff and then I started to pay attention to all the video game companies closing their doors and consolidating and they always cited piracy as a big cause. Because I was only downloading out dated games I never even made the connection until once again me and a friend found ourselves downloading Xbox 360 games and current gen PC games without even giving it a second thought.

A couple of years ago it finally got to me and I wiped my digital collections, deleted everything, well except for the classic video games I somehow convinced myself that buying a used copy from a store is no different than having a digital copy on my PC because the publisher is still not getting the sale.

However I noticed more and more companies were releasing their old games on PSN, Xbox Live Arcade, Nintendo e-Shop, and even Steam. I did a quick search through each virtual store and realized not only are the prices very reasonable, but the selection was also top notch in most cases. Sure there are those few obscure games that nobody bought new that you can’t get, but for the most part the stuff I was playing the most anyways is still readily available, which defeated my DMCA clause I hide behind for so long, the readily available in the marketplace clause that I soon discovered no longer held any weight.

As a result I did some seriously long and hard thinking and decided to make a change, I got rid of everything, if I didn’t purchase it from a legit source I deleted it out right. I still have some CD’s and since iTunes does allow you to rip those my iPhone still has enough music, paired with Pandora I am pretty much set and don’t even miss those MP3s at all.

I had acquired quite a few Blu Ray discs over the last few years and many came with iTunes copies so I still have most of those too, as well as a few I picked up with iTunes gift cards. I soon realized that it might cost a little more to do things legit but you gain two major benefits, first there is the quality as pirate goods are always inferior, second the affect it has on your soul knowing you are in the clear and have nothing to worry about. Even though it is something most people do without thinking, I realized piracy is not just bad for the industry, it is bad for society and that is why I shifted my focus.

Where does that leave me now? A much older and hopefully wiser video game collector. I don’t need to buy ten copies of the same game just because it was released on several consoles, and I don’t need to own every gaming machine ever made just because. Before I was collecting for the sake of collecting, sure I played the games too but not even a measurable fraction of the ones I had on hand. Now I am more collected and have a real purpose. I will begin obviously with what is available to me currently. I have Steam and my Laptop can surely handle most games from about 2011 backwards so I can pick up a few retro games here and there, I started with a Sega Genesis Classics collection.

I also have a PS2 I can dust off and pick up some classic compilations for for pretty cheap, and my PS3 has a 500GB hard drive connected to PSN that is just ripe with classic PS1 and Arcade games to snatch. I even noticed recently I was about to buy Mortal Kombat Trilogy and held off because I thought can’t I just get it on mame? The temptation to go back to pirate will be there for a while but as I have done with DVD’s and Blu Rays, I have found a way to silence that voice.

With movies and TV shows Netflix has provided me with an alternative and with video games Steam is holding me over just nicely. Eventually I will have to break down and get a few classic consoles, as many compilations and retro games are released on current systems there are still far too many classic NES, SNES, and Genesis games currently stuck on old dusty carts waiting to be plugged into a game console and replayed by a retro gamer who was there when they were new.

I began my journey of returning to legitimacy by picking up a Game Boy Color, and two classic games Tetris and  a two in one cart featuring Centipede and Millipede. The used game store has a pretty big selection of classic games I can sift through and the internet always has whatever I can’t find locally. I don’t intend to go back into a hoarder mode where I buy it just to have, I mostly just want to get back a few games that I know I will revisit often, and keep a clear conscience in the process. Stay Cool.
