The stuff of nightmares: A short story
It was a very nice, sunny day at the park. Jennifer was enjoying herself quite much. Sitting on the swings she would shoot towards the sky, cheer gleefully and she swooped back towards the earth. This process repeated until something caught her eye. It was a butterfly.
“Hmm, I thought they were extinct.” she thought to herself. She had never seen a living butterfly in her entire life. Sure they had images of them in the computer database along with videos on the internet, but she had never seen one in person. Her heart began racing with excitement as she chased the embodiment of beauty flutter past.
As Jennifer began chasing the majestic creature she quickly began to notice something was wrong. The clouds were darkening, the sky was turning black and she turned to see all her friends who moments ago had been playing happily at the park, were nowhere to be found.
Jennifer grew cold with freight. She knew what was coming next. Instead of chasing the impossible insect she turned to run away. As she began moving the sidewalk slowly began turning to dust. The layers were blowing beneath her feat as she ran with all her might, staying in place her fears increased. She could hear the laughter creeping in the distance. Oh no, he was coming for her and she was not about to let him get her. Not this time. She suddenly knew it was a dream. Calmly she forced herself to picture her bicycle on the street corner next to where she was.
Jennifer quickly hopped onto the bike and began pedaling. To her relief the bike began to move and she was finally getting further away from the nightmare. She was too terrified to turn back. Jennifer knew if she did she would realize her worst fears.
“Not. Tonight!” she thought intensely as her heart was racing, sweat pouring down her cheek. She was not about to give in. Today was a special day. She was supposed to wake up to a camping trip with her parents and sister. This was a happy day, the nightmare was supposed to stay away.
Jennifer had been having the very same dream, or some variation of it, for the past year or so. She had no clue where it came from or what it meant. At age 9 she barely understood what it meant to dream in the first place.
As she rode her bike her legs began to grow tired. The pain settled in, increasing her fear that once again the nightmare was going to get her.
She noticed an empty building. She ran inside. It was the old movie theater years ago, well before she was born. She never saw a movie theater. They existed in her mothers childhood but had long been relics of the past. Jennifer ran inside. Her subconscious not knowing what was inside a movie theater began to fill in the blanks as her wildest fears were imagined. There was an endless spiral staircase in the dead center of the room. In every dream where she got caught she always went downstairs. Not this time. She ran up the stairs clutching the hand rails with a determination she was going to escape this once and for all.
Jennifer began climbing the staircase. She could hear the laughter creeping up on her. She knew it was getting closer. She always assumed it was a he, even though she always woke up right when it caught her she never faced it, in her heart she just knew it had to be a guy. Nothing else made sense in her mind.
She climbed the stairs up past the ceiling and out onto the balcony. She had no choice, the staircase kept climbing into the clouds, which were now raging with a wild storm. Off in the distance she could see a tornado forming.
“Why is there always a tornado!” she thought to herself.
Once again remembering it was a dream she took a leap of faith. Jumping off the edge of the balcony that had enveloped the staircase, she began to fly. The voice was getting closer. Gaining on her it was, and so the fear began to cripple her. She realized even though she was flying she was but 2 inches off the ground. There, just a head was a swimming pool. Somehow she thought if she could just make it to the water she would be safe. Again, she had no clue why she felt that way but her gut told her to take the chance anyways.
“Jennifer wake up!”
Suddenly she snapped to. It was her mom. Standing there with a pot in one hand, a stirring utensil in the other.
“Hurry up sleepy head, we’re going to eat some pancakes real quick and be off to the camping trip very shortly. Get out of bed and get dressed right this instant.” her mother scolded her.
She grabbed her teddy bear, gave it a hug and went to the bathroom. She couldn’t recall what she had been dreaming but it must have been a happy dream she thought, because all she knew was she wanted to get back to sleep to finish it up.
Dark Web Daily- Pilot Monday June 11, 2018
https://www.podbean.com/media/share/pb-bhett-930727
Alright here it is my first attempt at a daily show. This new format is going to be called the Dark Web Daily Show. Think of it as a radio-friendly, broadcast style show. There will be more traditional segments, headlines and it will be more organized. The normal, unfiltered, unscripted show will still be uploaded on weekends.
Today’s episode is a full one. Headlines include: North Korea summitt, NBA Finals, celebrity suicides/mental health topics, DC films updates their schedule, E3 coverage so far and Gamestop selling comic books.
Each episode will containt a movie, music and video game topic plus headlines, social commentary and a few surprises. Ever Monday will be a segment called New Music Monday where I discuss a new band, album, or song I recently discovered. It will mostly be “new to me” but I might dabble in actual new music too.
The rest of the week the music segment will be my recommendations. Each day I will pick a CD, tape or other work from my collection and discuss it.
Today’s New Music topic was Dirty Johny. They are a local band in the Southern Idaho region who opened for rock legend Vince Neil of Motley Crue. I got to photograph him performing Dr. Feelgood Saturday night live in concert.
Be sure to check back daily as new episodes will upload Monday through Friday in a 1-hour talk news style show. Then on the weekends you will get the unfiltered, unrated raw Dark Web Podcast you’ve all come to love. The Dark Web Daily Show will be radio friendly, meaning you can enjoy it while at work. The podcast will remain the same as always.

The Dark Web Podcast Episode 27- Conspiracy theories!, plus E3 thoughts, predictions, and the digital future?
https://www.podbean.com/media/share/pb-2n73b-92f4ed
Every once in a while I will be making a case against something and midway through my argument realize I was changing my mind. I do this in this weeks episode. I tackled the all digital future of video games. I compared it to the all streaming/broadcasting model of Television and rag on the telecom companies being blamed for lack of high speed internet.
I tackle a few conspiracy theories just for fun. First up, is Michelle Obama really a man? Did 2Pac fake is death or was he murdered by his peers and they covered it up?
Aliens, 9/11, the moon, Mars, dinos vs. dragons and the hot topic of spiritual forces/supernatural powers.
Â
THIS WEEK SOMETHING NEW! I am switching to a 1 hour a day five day a week format with a 2 hour episode on Saturdays.
Â
The format will be more like a traditional radio show. The 5 day weekday shows will be a normal format and then the Saturday shows will continue to be the unscripted, unfiltered format you’ve all come to enjoy. I am hoping this new format will inspire more creativity.
Mission Marvel: Catching up with Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy films
Disney, Marvel and Lucas have been busy churning out one sci-fi blockbuster after another. The problem is they make so many movies it can be easy for a person to fall behind. This is going to be a series where I reflect on the different film sets within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. I decided to start with Guardians of the Galaxy volumes 1 and 2.
The Star Wars movie for the MCU.
My first impression of these two films is they were fantastic. I could easily see myself becoming hooked on this series. I was fortunate enough to watch them both back to back, saving myself the agony of waiting years in between.
I will also admit I was a fan of the new style Star Trek films. I enjoyed the 2009 film a lot. The sequels not so much but they were still fun to watch, more so than many of the previous films. I felt like Marvel found a way to combined the best elements from Fantastic Four, Star Wars and Star Trek all into one thrill ride that was pure adrenaline front to back.
I enjoyed the humor in this films. It felt like it was based on the characters in this world interacting in the way a ragtag band of misfits would act. Plus Groot was too cute. I especially enjoyed the throw away references to Howard the Duck. I mean those brief cameos were a hundred times better than the entirety of his previous live-action film.
I want to get into the positives before I tackle the nitpicks. These are the first movies in the Marvel Cinematic Universe where my nitpicks are literally just that, minor annoyances nothing jumped out at me as jarring or eye rolling it was more or less personal preferences for once.
The good. Amazing special effects. For a Marvel movie to impress me visually is becoming a feat. After seeing Civil War, Age of Ultron, Doctor Strange and even Thor: Ragnarock, I was worried the visuals wouldn’t impress me. Wow. That is all I can say. I didn’t see any CGI that made me cringe. I felt the movie was believable. I was having a nice Doctor Who vibe throughout the course of both films. This feeling was furthered by the realization the lovely Karen Gillan (the mesmerizing Amy Pond) was one of the main characters. It was also nice to see her play a villain (sort of) for once.
This takes me to the second positive aspect of the film, the characters. I felt they were all memorable, fun and enjoyable characters I was happy to follow along on their guest. I felt like this is probably the one MCU film series that would be best served as a long form TV series. I like the all star cast and top notch effects so I can see a TV series suffering but this was a really fun pair of films to behold.
This brings me to the final positive aspect. The plots of both films had real stakes beyond just stopping yet another alien trying to destroy or take over the Earth. I especially liked how it digs into the back story of the celestials while also providing even further lore for the infinity stones. Seeing Thanos on screen was also a big moment for the franchise.
The world building was a little forced, rushed even but at least they had a score of previous Marvel films to tie things into. I love the deep space lore in the Marvel comics. I especially was thrilled to see Ego realized as a character. It was also a very good decision to make him the villain of the film.
When I first started hearing all the good things about Guardians of the Galaxy my first thought was it surely would only appeal to die hard MCU fans. I know it had a large following and attributed that to the mainstream audience these films as a whole have been attracting. I think this is the first side series I truly believe was good enough it could stand on its own. Maybe not if there hadn’t been an MCU fanbase to launch it but I think if the remainder of the MCU falls apart they can turn this band of characters into a fantastic long running series on the level of Star Wars.
Now let’s tackle the minor nitpicks. These aren’t really negatives that lessened my enjoyment merely a couple items I wanted to address. The mix tape. I know they address it half way through the movie but I felt it was a misstep. I love the mixtape but I think, for a kid who was eight years old in 1988, those tunes wouldn’t make up his version of Awesome Mix. I mean sure it was his mothers songs and they made it known he was close to his mom but I think, in my opinion, he would have named it mom’s favorites or something not Awesome mix. I get the feeling the tunes were selected by the producer or director and they didn’t care the timeline wasn’t going to make damn sense. Still, they address is in film so I can accept it. Like I said very minor it was only the first thing I felt, okay that’s a little odd. The other thing was the throw away Zune reference. I rolled my eyes at that. I get it, it’s a well used joke in sci-fi space travel movies but come one it’s played out. Again, not something to lessen my enjoyment of the film.
I loved the chemistry between the characters. By the time they start referring to themselves as a family I was on board. It didn’t feel forced at all. This is also the first set of films in the MCU I honestly can say I am going to spend some more time with. I re-watched the first Avengers before I watched Ultron just to get caught up. I re-watched Civil War right before I watched Ragnarock. That’s it, I haven’t seen any single movie in the MCU more than once. They are all good movies. There’s just too many of them for me to keep up with already plus I have so much other stuff going on I can’t keep up. These two movies I can see myself watching over again. How much I don’t know. I revisit the Star Wars movies once a year. I watch all three of the Pirates of the Caribbean films every year. (I stop with At Worlds End the story was done) and I rewatch the Nightmare on Elm Street and Friday the 13th series once a year. I can see Guardians of the Galaxy being added to that lexicon for me.
Plus that Groot was just too cute. I might need to give Groot his own spin off series ala Droid or Ewoks.
Roseanne Rant- Dark Web Podcast Bonus Episode
https://www.podbean.com/media/share/pb-qwgqy-92a3c5
I decided I was so sick over this Roseanne situation I had to clear the air. This is a special bonus rant-filled episode where I dig a little deeper into the politics of what happened and why it bothers me.
I get a little into political ideologies again and end with a discussion onf YouTube content. I critique Nostalgia Critic, Anry Video Game Nerd, PewDiePie, and THE RAT (that’s me in case you were wondering.) And Yes I dish it out on others and my self. I discuss my music career, how I started as a party DJ turned record producer before settling on podcaster/writer.
This is a shorter episode, think of it as a mid-week refresh or I had way more to cover with Roseanne than I had time to get to the other day. Enjoy. Thanks for listening and please comment, share, like every little bit helps spread the word.
The Dark Web Podcast 25- Interview with Coral Chambers, actress, DJ and more. Also Roseane canceled
https://www.podbean.com/media/share/pb-658au-928809
In this episode I go off the rails. Roseanne getting cancelled over a Tweet pushed me into an angry rant.
Later in the episode I interview Coral Chambers, an actress, writer and former radio DJ with some interesting stories. We discuss the future of digital news as well as get into is 80’s music oldies or classic rock?
Warning: I get political in this episode.
